Rembrandt Statue
Statue of our most famous painter: Rembrandt van Rijn. Can I be absolutely honest with you?
I think that Rembrandt deserves a better statue than this one… I know there are more statues. This one, placed on his very own Rembrandt Square in Amsterdam, was made by Louis Royer in 1852. Some people may describe it as ‘casual’, but I think the statue doesn’t do this great man justice. I guess he could have done a better job himself, but of course he was a painter, not a sculptor. The statue is too smooth, not lively enough – in my humble opinion. But hey, who am I to say so? Anyway… I prefer Rembrandt’s paintings – amongst them some fantastic self portraits.

Laurens Janszoon Koster
Only in Haarlem we believe that this guy invented book printing. I guess we might be wrong, but nobody argues about the fact that Laurens Janszoon Koster was an important and early printer and he will always be a local hero to us.
